BernCo DA, former Federal Prosecutor, and former Obama DOJ alum to focus on Violent Crime, Protecting Vulnerable Residents, Criminal Justice Reform
ALBUQUERQUE — Today, Bernalillo County District Attorney Raúl Torrez announced his campaign for New Mexico Attorney General.
“New Mexico deserves a bold and fearless Attorney General to take on violent crime, protect our most vulnerable residents, and fight for sorely needed reforms across the criminal justice system,” said Torrez. “I work every day to keep New Mexico families safe, but the job is never done, and I’m ready to take on these tough fights in every corner of our state.”
Born and raised here in New Mexico, Raúl went on to serve as a federal prosecutor and senior advisor in President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice, where he fought to reduce border violence, crack down on drug cartels, and reduce violent crime and domestic abuse in Indian Country.
As Attorney General, he’ll use every available tool to fight crime, protect consumers, safeguard the environment and stand up for democracy. Raúl has taken on the toughest jobs during the crime crisis and shown that he won’t back down when it comes to protecting our community.
Torrez continued, “New Mexico needs a strong, experienced leader who isn’t afraid to stand up to protect our families. I’ve taken on right-wing militias, stood up for common sense gun safety laws, tackled the rape kit backlog and prosecuted violent crime, child abuse, and fraud. That’s the kind of tenacity and leadership New Mexicans deserve in the Attorney General’s Office -- someone who will never give up on building a better future for ourselves and the next generations.”
Raúl knows that accountability matters, and will take on predatory corporations and those who target seniors and vulnerable residents, hold polluters accountable for harming our environment, and investigate and prosecute political corruption and police misconduct when necessary.
Raúl is also recognized as a national leader for reform, being one of the first prosecutors in America to make information about police misconduct available to the public and piloting a program to provide full transparency about the demographic outcomes in our criminal justice system.
