ALBUQUERQUE — Today, Bernalillo County District Attorney Raúl Torrez announced that United States Senator Martin Heinrich has endorsed his campaign for New Mexico Attorney General.
“As New Mexico’s next Attorney General, Raúl Torrez will take on powerful interests and fight for our families. When Donald Trump tried to stoke violence in Albuquerque, Raúl stood strong. When a militia group thought they were above the law, Raúl took them on. We need an Attorney General who will protect consumers, safeguard our environment, tackle crime, reform our justice system, and stand up to attacks on our Democracy,” said Senator Heinrich. “That’s why I’m endorsing Raúl Torrez for Attorney General.”
Torrez and Heinrich have worked closely in recent years to bring critical public safety resources to Bernalillo County and stood together against possible federal overreach and the potential for civil rights abuses when President Trump’s Department of Justice sent federal agents to Albuquerque in the summer of 2020. In the face of threats to public safety from local right-wing militia groups around that time, Torrez launched a first of it’s kind lawsuit to protect local residents and hold private militias accountable for any attempts to usurp the state's military and law enforcement authorities.
“I’m proud to have Senator Heinrich’s endorsement and I look forward to working with him to help reform our criminal justice system, tackle violent crime, and take on extremists and powerful interests that threaten New Mexico families,” said Torrez.
